Versatile Plus EEG Acquisition Modes
three acquisition modes to suit different research needs
The Versatile Plus EEG amplifier offers three acquisition modes to suit different research needs: participant mobility, sampling rate, latency, and data storage.
The following sections describe each acquisition mode and provide guidance on when to use each one. For instructions on how to configure these modes in SennsLite, refer to the corresponding section of the SennsLite User Manual, available in our Donwload Center.
Bluetooth Only
The amplifier streams data wirelessly to the acquisition computer via Bluetooth. Data is recorded directly on the computer, and no backup copy is stored on the device's internal memory.
Maximum sampling rate: 256 Hz
Recommended for: standard EEG studies requiring participant mobility and sampling rates up to 256 Hz, where recordings can be stored directly on the acquisition computer and local backup recording is not required.
Note: if the Bluetooth connection is interrupted during recording, the affected data cannot be recovered because no local backup is stored on the device.
Bluetooth + Internal SD Card
The amplifier streams data via Bluetooth in real time while simultaneously storing the complete recording on its internal SD card. This provides a local backup of the recording and helps protect against temporary wireless communication interruptions.
Maximum sampling rate: 2048 Hz
Note: When using this mode, data is streamed via Bluetooth at a fixed sampling rate of 256 Hz for real-time monitoring, while the complete recording is stored on the internal SD card at the configured sampling rate (up to 2048 Hz).
Recommended for: applications requiring participant mobility, high sampling rates, or local backup recording on the device.
Important: data stored on the internal SD card are not automatically included in exported recordings. To access them, the SD card must first be mounted and imported into the software. Otherwise, the exported file will contain only the data received via Bluetooth.
See the Data Management section of the SennsLite User Manual for more information on importing recordings.
USB Acquisition
The amplifier connects directly to the acquisition computer using the supplied USB cable and the Isolator** accessory. Data is transferred over the wired connection and recorded directly on the computer. Important: internal SD card recording is not available in this mode.
**About the Isolator: the Isolator provides electrical isolation between the amplifier and the computer, protecting the device from electrical noise and potential power surges that could affect recording quality or the hardware itself. It must always be used whenever the Versatile Plus EEG is connected to a computer via USB for: data acquisition, data transfer, or battery charging. For detailed information on its correct use, refer to the Versatile Plus EEG User Manual.
Maximum sampling rate: 1024 Hz
Recommended for:
- Long-duration recordings, since acquisition is not limited by battery life.
- Latency-sensitive applications.
- Scenarios where minimizing transmission delay and timing variability is important.
Overview of Available Modes
Acquisition Mode | Maximum Sampling Rate | Internal SD Card Storage |
|---|---|---|
Bluetooth Only | 256 Hz | No |
Bluetooth + Internal SD Card | 2048 Hz | Yes |
USB Acquisition | 1024 Hz | Not available |
Which Acquisition Mode Should I Choose?
The following recommendations are intended as general guidance. The most suitable acquisition mode will depend on the specific requirements of your study. For most EEG applications (cognitive neuroscience, neurofeedback, brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), and general electrophysiological research), a sampling rate between 256 Hz and 512 Hz is typically sufficient.
Higher sampling rates may be beneficial when analyzing high-frequency signal components, performing advanced offline processing, or conducting studies that require very precise temporal resolution.
General recommendation: select the lowest sampling rate that adequately captures the signals of interest. This reduces storage requirements and processing time without compromising data quality.
If your priority is… | Recommended Acquisition Mode |
|---|---|
Wireless acquisition with participant mobility and direct recording on the computer | Bluetooth Only |
Wireless acquisition with local backup recording | Bluetooth + Internal SD Card |
Wireless acquisition with the highest sampling rates | Bluetooth + Internal SD Card |
Lowest possible latency | USB Acquisition |
Long-duration recordings without battery constraints | USB Acquisition |
