Improving Minimal EEG system Signal Quality

EEG Data Quality

If EEG data quality is not adequate, check the following:

  • Check Impedance - If one or more of the sensors offer poor signal quality, check that there is correct contact between the electrode and the scalp and is not blocked by hair.

Please note that to ensure optimal electrode–scalp contact, participants should have clean, dry hair and avoid using hair gels, sprays, lacquers, oils or other styling products prior to the recording, as these can negatively impact signal quality.

  • Verify Reference and Ground - If all sensors show a noisy signal, check that both the reference and ground sensors are correctly placed and making good contact with the skin. If you are unsure which sensors are used for reference and ground in your setup, please refer to the system layout in the following Help Center link: Comparative Minimal EEG Electrode Layout
  • Check Connector - Ensure the connector is firmly attached to the amplifier (a double click should be heard when inserting it). Verify that the blue “This Side Up” label is aligned with the side of the amplifier displaying the Bitbrain logo.
  • Check Battery - If the battery LED is red, indicating a low battery level, stop the recording and recharge the device before continuing. Operating with a battery level may negatively affect signal quality.
  • Disconnect Power Cable - Ensure the device is not connected to the power cable during data acquisition, as this may introduce noise into the signals.
  • Verify Bluetooth Connection - Check the Bluetooth connection between the headset and the laptop or tablet. Make sure the participant is not located on the edge of Blutooth range and remove any potential sources of interference.
  • Review Quickstart Guide - Check the quickstart guide of our Download Center for your specific Minimal EEG system for help with setup.
