How to Change the Workstation Software: Sennslab & Sennsmetrics

Explanation of the software migration and the corresponding data

The purpose of this article is to explain how to transfer the software from one computer to another, exploring the available options to move all the data. You’ll find step-by-step guidance.

To make the available operations easier to follow, it is specified whether they should be performed on Station 1 (the computer where the software is initially installed) or on Station 2 (the new computer where the software will be installed) and following the same process sequentially for each software platform

*Important: The software transfer from one computer to another should only be performed when no studies are in progress, as interrupting an active study could result in data loss.

Sennslab

Before deactivating the licenses, make sure to export the necessary data so it can be imported later.

Save studies compatible with SennsCloud – Station 1

If the sessions have been successfully uploaded to SennsCloud, they are stored in the cloud and can be downloaded later via SennsMetrics.

If you have any sessions pending upload, perform the upload in Data Management using the Upload study definition button or selecting a participant session and selecting Upload recording button. Make sure no sessions remain pending before switching stations.

Export study definitions – Station 1

Study definitions in Sennslab can be exported locally (as a .zip file).

  1. Export the study definition: In Sennslab, go to Manage studies > Select the study you want to export → Click “Export” and choose the option “Export study definition to zip file in local system.”
  2. Locate the exported files: Exported studies are saved at C:\sennsLabZipFiles\Studies (Each study is stored as a .zip file).
  3. Transfer and save them on your new station so they can be imported.

Make sure to export all studies needed before deactivating the license on the previous computer.

Save studies with recorded participants (raw data) – Station 1

The only way to export recorded participants in CSV format is via the local file system.

In the “Data Management” section, select the desired study and click the CSV button to export it.

  • To export a specific participant, select the participant and click the corresponding CSV button.
  • To export a specific task, select the task and click the corresponding CSV button.
  • To transfer the study folders containing the recorded sessions, go to the following path: C:\sennsLabZipFiles\exportData

Deactivate Sennslab License – Station 1

Once you have down or uploaded all the necessary studies data, the license can be deactivated.

Please refer to the process on page 9 of the Sennslab manual

If deactivation is not possible (e.g., due to a computer failure), please contact [email protected] to request manual deactivation.

Where to download Sennslab? - Station 2

The latest versions of Sennslab are available in the Download Center

Activate License – Station 2

Please refer to the process on page 9 of the Sennslab manual

If activation is not possible (e.g., due to a computer failure), please contact [email protected] to request manual deactivation.

Import study definitions in zip format – Station 2

To import previously exported studies

  • Go to Manage Studies and select Import.
  • Choose the option "Import Study Definition from Local ZIP File".
  • Select the ZIP file containing the study and click Open.
  • A message will appear saying "Study successfully imported"

Once imported, it is important to keep the entire folder on the saved file path so that Sennslab has access to all necessary data.

Confirm Successful Data Transfer – Station 2

Run the required tests on the selected studies to confirm that Station 2 is fully functional.

Sennsmetrics

Sennsmetrics operates through a cloud platform, where all previously uploaded studies remain available for download on any new computer. The migration process only requires exporting user definitions; no other data needs to be transferred.

User definitions refer to all events created within a study for detailed comparative analysis.

Export user definitions – Station 1

Before deactivating the license, make sure to export all the user definitions created in your studies.

User definitions refer to:

  • Events (such as Areas of Interest and Time of Interest)
  • Segments created in Sennsmetrics for analysis purposes

You will need to export the definitions for each study you wish to keep. To do so:

  1. Open the corresponding study in Sennsmetrics.
  2. Go to Data > Import/Export User Definitions > Export.

The user definitions will be exported as a JSON file. You can find the file at the following path: C:\Users\User\SennsMetrics\StudyName[id]\user_definitions

Make sure to save the required files or transfer them to the new computer.

How to recover my output

If you have exported videos, images, or Excel files, they will be stored at the following path:
C:\Users\User\SennsMetrics\Studyname

You can save them if you consider it necessary.

Deactivate Sennsmetrics License – Station 1

Once you have downloaded all the necessary user definitions files, the license can be deactivated.

Please refer to the process on page 10 of the Sennsmetrics manual

If deactivation is not possible (e.g., due to a computer failure), please contact [email protected] to request manual deactivation.

Where to download Sennsmetrics? – Station 2

The latest versions of Sennsmetrics are available in the Download Center.

Activate License – Station 2

Please refer to the process on page 9 of the Sennslab manual

If activation is not possible (e.g., due to a computer failure), please contact [email protected] to request manual deactivation.

Import studies – Station 2

To import studies previously exported in Sennslab from the cloud.

Studies remain stored in the cloud indefinitely, and activating the license on a new computer provides access to all previously saved studies.

  1. Go to Manage Studies.
  2. Click on the “Import Study” icon (cross symbol).
  3. Select the study you want to import.

Choose “Import from Cloud”.

Import user data – Station 2

To import user data previously exported:

  1. Import the whole study
  2. Open the study
  3. Go to “Export” > “Data
  4. Select “Import/export user definitions”>” Import”
  5. Select the corresponding user_data.json
